Best-of-Show Architectural Award for Iconic Design

HANOI, 10 July 2009 - International consultancy Thinkscape Group has won the best-of-show Special Award at a recent architectural design competition for a planned tower project in Hanoi, Vietnam.

Thinkscape won the top recognition based on the criteria of creativity, identity, functionality, cultural and environmental relevance. The judges’ overwhelming votes in favour of the winning work resulted in the final evaluation process between the top-two deemed irrelevant.

“We were pitted against some of the best architectural firms from France, Australia, Hong Kong and Vietnam. This victory reflects the standing of our architectural division, Thinkscape Team3,” said group managing director John Jong.

Organised by Doan Ket Village Co. Ltd., a subsidiary of a local bank, the project in focus was a luxury serviced apartment tower at the West Lake district in Hanoi, Vietnam. The winning work was proposal for what is to be the tallest tower in the city.

Named “The Lotus”, the award-winning design was inspired by the lotus bud, in homage to the local culture and history. The design also represents the Asian clasp-palms that symbolises offering and sincerity; while the two-halves of the tower reflect the East Asian philosophy of balance and harmony.

Instead of the usual “glass-box” design, the exterior of this tower consists a jigsaw of metal shutters from individual units. As individual dwellers open and close their shutters, the texture of the building evolves – thus ensuring the tower will never look exactly the same at any given time. This also mimics the lotus in a pond, which blooms and closes at different time of a day. Click here to view the work.
